Implicit in taking office in 1999 as the first elected governor of Bayelsa, created in 1996: complete the mandate and build the young state's institutions.

Assessment

Alamieyeseigha was elected in May 1999 on the PDP platform and re-elected in 2003, but did not complete the second term. He was arrested in London in September 2005, jumped bail in December 2005, and was impeached by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly on 9 December 2005; his deputy Goodluck Jonathan completed the term.

To administer the revenues of an oil-producing, derivation-benefiting state for the development of Bayelsa.

Assessment

Investigators found roughly £1.8 million in cash and bank accounts and about £10 million in London property linked to Alamieyeseigha — set against a state whose monthly federal allocation was in the region of £32 million. He later pleaded guilty in Nigeria to six corruption counts.

To press the Ijaw and wider Niger Delta case for a greater share of oil revenue and control of resources, a persona he cultivated as self-styled 'Governor-General of the Ijaw nation'.

Assessment

Alamieyeseigha was among the most vocal governors on resource control and derivation during the term, and Bayelsa benefited from the 13% derivation formula secured in this period. His personal downfall in 2005, however, badly damaged the credibility of the cause he had fronted.
