Military tribunal conviction of Ambrose Alli (1984)
Govt Lost
What the case is about
After the December 1983 coup, Alli was tried alongside other Second Republic politicians before a military tribunal with no right of appeal to the regular courts.
Ruling & compliance
He was convicted of corruption-related charges and sentenced to a long prison term, released on health grounds in 1986, and died in 1989. Trials of elected officials before military tribunals are widely regarded as victor's justice; the university he founded now bears his name.
