Allegation
A seven-man judicial commission of inquiry set up by Governor Nyesom Wike alleged Amaechi's administration improperly withdrew ₦96 billion from the state treasury, and questioned the sale of assets including the Omoku, Afam, Trans Amadi and Eleme gas turbines, the Olympia Hotel, and the award of the Mono Rail Project contract.
Outcome / Status
Amaechi went to the Supreme Court seeking to stop the inquiry into his tenure. On 27 May 2022 the Court dismissed his appeal, ruling the commission of inquiry was a fact-finding body only, with no power to convict and no legal force to its findings, and that nobody was on trial before it. Weeks later, in June 2022, Rivers State filed criminal charges against Amaechi and Tonye Cole based on the panel's findings; the state withdrew those charges in September 2022, citing lack of merit.
Administration's response
Amaechi's media office called the ruling a vindication, arguing the panel's findings could not stand as an indictment. Rivers State read the same panel findings differently: it filed criminal charges against Amaechi and Cole weeks after the ruling, before withdrawing them four months later.
