Assessment
Ige lost the August 1983 election to Victor Omololu Olunloyo of the NPN amid UPN allegations of large-scale rigging. Olunloyo served roughly three months before the December 1983 coup. Ige went on to be a senior progressive figure, Minister of Mines and Power then Attorney-General of the Federation under Obasanjo, and was assassinated at home in Ibadan in December 2001.
