Assessment
Ogun State University was founded at Ago-Iwoye in 1982 during his term. It was renamed Olabisi Onabanjo University in his honour in 2001.

Assessment
Onabanjo was re-elected in 1983 and removed by the 31 December 1983 coup. He was tried by a Buhari-era military tribunal and jailed for corruption; released on health grounds, he died in 1990. Ogun's main airport road and its state university carry his name.
