His tenure was defined by an extended legal battle over the 14 April 2007 election: sacked and forced into a partial rerun in February 2009, reinstated after winning that rerun in May 2009, then finally removed in October 2010 when an appellate tribunal declared rival candidate Kayode Fayemi the duly elected governor based on the original 2007 vote count.
