A group calling itself Concerned Indigenes of Taraba State petitioned the EFCC and ICPC in January 2009 alleging fraudulent financial practices under Suntai, including unnecessary imports of foreign cars, preference for foreign over local workers, and inflated road-construction contracts; the EFCC separately opened an investigation into alleged conspiracy, abuse of office, misappropriation of public funds and money laundering running into billions of naira while Suntai was in Germany recovering from his October 2012 plane crash.
