The promise

In his 29 May 2007 inaugural address, pledged to build a transparent, honest and egalitarian society based on the rule of law, wage war against corruption, and insist on high standards of probity and accountability from public officers.

Assessment

Suswam and his Finance Commissioner were later arraigned by the EFCC over an alleged ₦3.1 billion fraud involving the state's shares in Benue Investment and Property Company Limited, a case that remained unresolved more than a decade after arraignment.

Assessment

Suswam's re-election was challenged by runner-up Torkuma Ugba in a petition that dragged through years of procedural fights, reaching the Supreme Court, which ordered on 14 November 2011 that the petition be heard on the merits; Suswam nonetheless went on to serve his full second term through May 2015.
