Bank records reviewed by The Peoples Gazette showed more than ₦3.6 billion in government payments made to Umahi's own company, Brass Engineering & Construction Nigeria Limited, from 2011 (while he was deputy governor) through his governorship.
Outcome / Status
Umahi rejected the report, and he and an aide were accused of threatening the reporters; Umahi sued the publication for defamation and demanded ₦2 billion in damages, and separately sought a ₦1 billion 'atonement' retraction, which the outlet refused to issue.
Administration's response
Umahi denied the allegations and pursued a defamation suit against the publisher rather than responding to the underlying claims through an anti-corruption agency probe.
