Yerima was elected in 1999 and re-elected in 2003, serving two full terms to 29 May 2007 before moving to the Senate, where he represented Zamfara West until 2019.

Yerima campaigned on adopting Islamic criminal law for Zamfara.
Assessment
Zamfara became the first Nigerian state to implement Sharia criminal law, effective 27 January 2000, an event celebrated by large crowds in Gusau. The administration set up a Council of Ulama, a Hisbah Commission, a Zakkat and Endowment Board, a Sharia Research and Development Board and a Preaching Commission, and banned alcohol sales and prostitution statewide. Twelve northern states followed Zamfara's lead. Court challenges by a human-rights NGO and a Christian resident were dismissed by the Zamfara State High Court.
