Election
Gawuna v. Yusuf (2023 governorship election petition)
Govt Won
What the case is about
APC's Nasir Gawuna petitioned to overturn Yusuf's victory in the March 2023 governorship election.
Ruling & compliance
The Election Petition Tribunal nullified Yusuf's win in September 2023 and the Court of Appeal upheld that decision, but the Supreme Court reversed both lower courts and affirmed Yusuf as the duly elected governor.
Governance
Bayero v. Kano State Government (Emirate reinstatement dispute)
Govt Lost
What the case is about
After Governor Yusuf's May 2024 repeal of the 2019 Emirate law and reinstatement of Sanusi as Emir, rival claimant Aminu Ado Bayero sued to retain the position, obtaining a Federal High Court injunction in his favour.
Ruling & compliance
The Federal High Court initially ruled for Bayero, but the Court of Appeal reversed this in January 2025, restoring Sanusi's reinstatement — a decision itself subject to a further Appeal Court suspension order in March 2025 pending the Supreme Court, which has fixed the case for hearing in April 2027.
Governance
Kano State Government v. Bayero (Court of Appeal reversal)
Govt Won
What the case is about
The Kano State Government appealed the Federal High Court's ruling that had favoured Bayero in the Emirate dispute.
Ruling & compliance
The Court of Appeal upturned the lower court's verdict, restoring Sanusi's status as the recognised Emir under state law — though enforcement was itself later suspended pending the Supreme Court's final ruling, expected no earlier than 2027.
Election
Tiga & APC v. KANSIEC (local government electoral commission case)
Govt Won
What the case is about
A Federal High Court sacked the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) chairman, Prof. Sani Malumfashi, in October 2024 for being a card-carrying NNPP member, in a suit filed by an APC-aligned petitioner days before a scheduled local government election.
Ruling & compliance
The Court of Appeal overturned the lower court's ruling in May 2025, upholding the validity of the local government election the Kano State Government had conducted.
